If one scanner can scan it why can't they all?

Scanners have different optics, different light sources and strengths, different focal lengths, and different software.  The computers to which they will be connected will have different decoding programmes installed that may contain different decoding algorithms that may ‘forgive' some faults but not others. Decades ago the automatic identification industry decided that standardising the bar codes to provide the benchmark was more rational than trying to standardise all of the associated hardware and software.
