The ‘scan rate’ reported on the first page of GS1 barcode verification reports is intended to indicate to the grocery trade that the barcode is not likely to completely fail to scan.
The fact that it has failed the full verification test raises a warning that it cannot be relied upon to scan easily and quickly all the time first time across all scanning systems. Obtaining a scan may however still be possible. Accordingly GS1 will assign it a “100% scan rate.” indicating that with some degree of effort and delay an operator will usually manage to get a scan. Predicting a precise actual scan rate is impossible so 100% is the default.
Where a barcode will not scan at all a scan rate of zero will be indicated.
